Function and cleaning of a sink overflow hole - Explained

There are some places in our bathroom where the brush does not reach properly and remain impure, over time the bacteria begin to accumulate in those spaces and a strange smell begins to accumulate. To clean it, House Cleaning Kenmore has put together some tips, following which you will get a clean and odor-free bathroom.

What is the sink overflow hole?

When house cleaning, the main function of the overflow hole is to prevent flooding of the sink. The hole deflects the water, giving you more time before the contents (water in your sink) of your sink can leak. It is useful if someone accidentally leaves the tap open or in case of  plumbing problems.

Tips for keeping the overflow hole clean

During house cleaning, now that you know the main function of the overflow hole, you need to know how to keep it clean and clear. These are some of the things you need to keep your overflow hole clean.

• A pipe cleaner or brush to clean the sink.

• A funnel made of silicone or any other material capable of resisting the temperature of boiling water and does not conduct heat.

• 2 or 3 liters of boiling water

When house cleaning, you need to run the brush or pipe cleaner into the overflow hole. Push the brush inward or outward several times to remove as much build-up or dirt as possible. Place the funnel in the overflow hole and slowly pour the boiling water through the funnel. It will remove or rinse the residual build-up. Repeat this procedure when necessary.

In case the overflow hole stinks

When house cleaning, if there is mold or mildew in the overflow hole, it will leave an unpleasant smell. To remove this unpleasant smell, there are a few of the things that you need to clean it.

• A cup of baking soda

• A cup of distilled white vinegar

• 2 liters of boiling water

• A silicone funnel or any material that does not conduct heat and can withstand the temperature of boiling water.

During house cleaning, place the funnel in the overflow hole in the sink, then pour the baking soda into the funnel. You can then slowly pour the vinegar into the funnel and be prepared for a little sparkling. Let the mixture stay there for about 15 minutes and let the substances work their magic. After that you can pour the boiling water into the funnel and let the smell disappear.

Few warnings

During house cleaning, make sure to wear protective gloves, especially when handling vinegar and baking soda together. When handling hot water, you need to pay attention to the steam or hot water that touches the skin, as it may leave blisters.
